Auf einer Infotafel neben der Kirche steht:

Sie wurde ab 1250 aus behauenen Feldsteinen als dreischiffige Pfeilerbasilika mit Chor und wehrhaftem Turm erbaut. An ihren Mauern kann man in einmaliger Weise die Veränderungen der Jahrhunderte ablesen; Fenster- und Türdurchbrüche, Abrisse und Anbauten, Einwölbung und Überdachung, Aufstockung des Turmes (1500 und 1726). Sie birgt im Inneren viele Bau- und Kunsthistorische Details. In den unzugänglichen Grüften siend die Adelsherren der Stadt:

  • Joachim von Krummensee (+ 1624), Kirchenpatron
  • Freiherr Otto von Schwerin ( +1679), erster Staatsmann und Freund des großen Kurfürsten, Präsident des Geheimen Rates
  • Graf Otto von Schwerin (+1705), Staatsminister und Diplomat des Kurfürsten und Königs Friedrich I.

sowie deren Familien bestattet.
